Hear About a New Hero at Hub Comics

Published February 2024

In the Square since 2008, Hub Comics is a haven for fans of superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy, and much much more. An avid comic book fan since his youth, owner Tim Finn took over the business in 2011 and has since revamped the storefront, strengthened Hub Comics’ engagement with the community, and spread his love of all things comics. Tim took a few moments between filming his energetic one-minute shop updates to share the story behind the store.

Tell us a little bit about Hub Comics!

Hub Comics is a graphic novel store with a curated selection of the finest alternative, non-fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, action, young adult, and all-ages comics, plus art books, back issues, and "this week" new single issues. Several times a year we host author/artist signings in-store, and proudly sponsor several area conventions such as the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE). We are happy to answer your questions, make recommendations, help you recall that story you heard about, and match you to a beautiful and compelling book.

What inspired you to start a business? How did this feeling grow once you actually started your business?

I worked at a comic shop in high school in Maryland, and for the ten years before I took over Hub Comics in 2011, was always querying and making suggestions to the owner of the nearby shop I frequented. In between, I was reading comics history, scouring catalogs for upcoming releases, teaching comics at the college level, and drawing and publishing my own comics. Owning a shop felt like a convergence of all of this.

What aspect of your business make you most proud to be a business leader in our community?

That we're down the street from the library, whose graphic novel collection we’ve helped build; that we help Argenziano with its book drive; and that people in Somerville, and Boston at-large, really want to read, and want to read a physical object, all make me feel connected. That so many people expressed concern when we re-opened after our big renovation ("We thought you had closed!"), and said positive things about the new shop interior, reminded me how invested our customers and neighbors are.

How do you #LoveUnionSquare?

I shop and dine here, even though I live elsewhere in Somerville. Hub Comics promotes Union Square events with posters and flyers—I love that community gatherings, music shows, and plays at the high school are announced on our window that people pass by every day.

Is there anything else you think a Square customer would like to know?
