This order is all composed of movement and change...an intricate ballet in which the individual dancers and ensembles all have distinctive parts which miraculously reinforce each other and compose an orderly whole. The ballet of the good city sidewalk never repeats itself from place to place, and in any one place is always replete with improvisations.
— Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities

Dear Union Square Lover,

This year has been another filled with quicksteps and fancy footwork.

We’ve tangoed with immense challenges and celebrated resilience throughout Union Square as we improvised the ballet of the good city sidewalk – together.

From dancing in the streets at the Farmers Market to helping local businesses with parklet and patio licensing to enlivening the Square with Sweet 16 Fluff Fest public art and placemaking activities, Union Square Main Streets exists to serve the emerging needs of our dynamic and spirited neighborhood.

The intricate ballet that we dance as neighbors, small business owners and enthusiasts, farmers market patrons and vendors, and Union Square lovers is more important than ever. Next year we will welcome a new mayor, the Green Line (it will happen!), and thousands of workers who fill new buildings in Boynton Yards and the D Blocks.

The vitality of our dance is what will keep our beloved Square uniquely-Union, as we embrace one another, our histories, and the vast evolution pirouetting around us.

I love the way USMS works, and the fact that you operate as a “public radio-like” model where you help out businesses whether they pay or not, made us want to donate even more!
