For an 8th year, Union Square Main Streets and local businesses proudly present Good Food for All, a week-long community campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Union Square Farmers Market’s local SNAP match.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, previously Food Stamps) recipients often find fresh, local food at farmers markets inaccessible, yet these foods are vital for strong and healthy immune systems.
To increase accessibility to these local food sources, the Union Square Farmers Market offers a SNAP Match Program: USFM matches SNAP funds that shoppers use with market vendors, dollar-for-dollar up to $15 each market day. This means that a shopper gets $30 to shop SNAP-eligible goods while only spending $15 of their benefits, doubling their purchasing power.
Since 2005, USMS has raised more than $102,000 to match SNAP dollars, making it possible for more neighbors to participate in and enjoy the bounty of its farmers market. Good Food For All ensures that this vital food access program continues.
Participating businesses show their dedication to the Union Square community by donating to support the SNAP Match – funds that will be spent at the Union Square Farmers Market, not at their own brick-and-mortars. Prioritizing access and community health are values important to many independently owned businesses in the Square and Good Food For All is excited to highlight them throughout the fundraiser. You can too by dining, shopping, and playing with them.
How much does this matter?
During the 2010 Union Square Farmers Market season, USMS issued $164 in SNAP and match per market. In the 2024 season, the average SNAP and match issued per market was $1,796 – an astounding 995% increase. While this increase shows that fresh food continues to be a priority for all, it also means Good Food For All is even more important than ever.
Friends and neighbors, please come to the table and to help USMS sustain a farmers market for all.
