Myrth Ceramics, with owner Abigail Smallwood working the wheel, has adorned the dinner tables of neighbors and restaurants alike since moving to the Square in 2020. Between glaze development and preparing for the launch of her new dinnerware collection, we slipped in a chat with Abigail to talk about her passion of making timeless pieces for everyday enjoyment.

Tell us a little bit about your business!

Myrth is a small-batch ceramic design studio located at 17 Hawkins Street. We specialize in designing and hand-crafting porcelain tableware and vases. Our goods are intended to be timeless and long lasting adornments for your home.

What inspired you to start a business? How did this feeling grow once you actually started your business?

We started Myrth in 2015 as a passion project separate from our full time jobs as product designers. Our goal in starting Myrth was to design and manufacture high quality, long lasting home goods that bring joy to folks' lives. We both had previous careers in product design where products were designed quickly and without much thought to their lasting impact. Myrth was our rebuttal to this. It feels wonderful to know our products are modern heirlooms that will last lifetimes.

What makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?

I adore the community we are creating with Myrth. We almost moved away from Boston many years ago before starting Myrth because we just couldn't find our people. When we started Myrth, our people—who we now call Myrthlings—came out of the woodwork. It feels so great to connect with folks over a shared love of good design, and of course, food. We feel so lucky that Myrth is a part of folks' daily lives.

How do you #LoveUnionSquare?

The food!! We are awash in amazing food in Union Square. Some of our favorites are Vinal Bakery, Remnant Brewing, Rebel Rebel, Littleburg, Ebi Sushi, Reliable Market, the Union Square Farmers Market, and Field & Vine where you can dine on Myrth dishes.

Myrth Ceramics is open for in-store shopping Fri & Sat 11am-5pm and Tues-Thurs by appointment only. Shop their new products any time on Myrth Shop and follow them on Instagram for a behind the scenes look at their process!
