A Celebration of Design North of the Charles
Launch of Design Annex & Open House for Ground Inc and Grand
374 Somerville Avenue, Union Square, Somerville, MA
Friday, April 3, 2009 starting at 6 pm
Celebrate the vibrancy of Union Square's design economy! Give an official welcome to two design-oriented businesses in Union Square and help launch Design Annex, a new coworking space for the creative economy. The Design Annex is under construction down the street so the party is at 374 Somerville Avenue at Grand and Ground Inc.

An initiative of Union Square Main Streets, Design Annex provides the resources for small firms and solo practitioners in design fields in Somerville and surrounding communities to grow their businesses. Slated to open June 2009 at 66-70 Union Square, just off the central plaza, the facility includes a co-working space with conference room, lounge with a resource library, shared equipment and ventilated model building studio. With a tiered membership structure that offers access to networking and educational programming as well as office and equipment resources, the Design Annex seeks to build a robust network of collaborative, thriving, design-related businesses centered in Union Square, Somerville.  Ground is a landscape architecture practice committed to the creation of exceptional and artful landscapes. Their sustainable approach is multi-tiered, striving to create landscapes that add ecological, social, financial and aesthetic value. Work ranges from international plazas on high-profile sites to small-scale urban art interventions, to residential landscapes and contemporary green roofs. Founding Principal of Ground is Shauna Gillies-Smith, landscape architect, public artist and former bicycle racer. Shauna holds professional degrees from the University of British Columbia and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where she is presently on the faculty. Previously she was the Director of Design for the US office of Martha Schwartz, Inc. and currently sits on the editorial board of Architecture Boston Magazine. Shauna lectures widely at conferences on issues of sustainability and urban design quality.  Grand is a retailer specializing in contemporary home furnishings, apparel, and gifts. The store offers the latest products from independent designers around the globe that focus on quality, individuality, and affordability. Grand uniquely combines art, commerce, and style in a retail shop. Grand is the invention of Jonathan O'Toole, Wendy Friedman and Adam Larson. Jonathan was on the inner circle of BzzAgent, a revolutionary agency that pioneered word-of-mouth marketing. Wendy is a style aficionado and has worked as a graphic designer for Rykodisc, Don Law Company, Fidelity Investments, and Hill, Holliday. Adam's work has been recognized for excellence by various organizations including the Clio Awards, Cannes Lions, and the Emmy's. He recently left Arnold Worldwide (where he was a VP and Creative Director) to open his own studio called Adam&Co. Grand
