Goals

  • Enhance pedestrian accessibility and safety

  • Increase accessibility and access to public transportation

  • Improve traffic patterns and access to parking

  • Provide public updates and comments on transportation issues

Projects in 2007 & 2008: (see also Design)

  • Monitored progress in Green Line planning. Participated on Community Advisory Committee of Executive Office of Transportation. Participated in land-use planning discussions along the Green Line corridor with City of Somerville and Somerville groups.

  • Hosted two community meetings with STEP to solicit community feedback on Green Line station placement, alignment and design.

  • Coordinated truck ad noise study  to determine volume, impacts and source of heavy trucking through Central Business District. Documented 200 trucks passing in 140 minutes on Washington Street.

  • Coordinated pedestrian assessment of CBD with WalkBoston.

The Green Line Extension from Lechmere to Medford with a spur to Union Square will have a major economic impact for the neighborhood.  USMS is strongly in favor of the creation of a T station in Union Square.

Several groups are also working on behalf of the Green Line extension including Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership and the Medford Greenline Neighborhood Alliance.
