"What the Fluff?" is presented by Union Square Main Streets as part of ArtsUnion, an initiative shepherded by the Somerville Arts Council and funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The event is made possible thanks to generous sponsors, local business support, talented team leaders and a magnificent group of volunteers.

This year we explore the Fluffernutter an the inherent dramatic tension between sweet Fluff, salty Peanut Butter, wondrous Bread and that jealous Jelly!

Performances: An exceptional line-up including Jordan Valentine & the Sunday Saints, Rex Complex, and the oh-so-aptly-titled for our Fluff fest, Los Sugar Kings. We'll have Flufferettes again too, this year interpreted for us with a G-rated performance by Babes in Boinkland.

Cooking Contest: We all know Fluff can be used in a number of excellent recipes. Judges Maryann Heuston, Somerville Alderman from Union Square's Ward 2, Darra Goldstein, Editor and Founder of Gastronomica Magazine and Alex Whitmore of Taza Chocolate selected these winners:

Best Overall Grand Prize Winner: Avocado Mallow Ice Cream/ Liza Vitale
Best Traditional Recipe: Sweet Potato Pie with Toasted Marshmallow Meringue/Gretchen Eisenman
Best Original Recipe: Fluff-kin/ Aaron Nevin
Most Creative Presentation: Fluffy Mountain Cakes/Laurie Torosian
Best Youth Entry: Fluffies/ Nicole Morales, Kristie and Bruna Lino
Honorable Mention: Fluffalicious Mini Tart Cups/ Maria Kiely

See the top winning recipes here.

Fabulous Pharaoh of Fluff: Local poet Gary Duehr and the Fluff team winnowed down the entries to our finalists.  You voted and Cevin Soling was crowned our Pharaoh.  There he is waved to his sweet subjects with Mayor Joe Curtatone and last year's Pharaoh Kristina Smarz welcoming him to his year of reign.

Light & Fluffy Shenanigans & Prizes: Take part in a wide array of wacky games.  We'll see the return of favorites including The Fluff Lick-Off, Blind Man's Fluff, and the Fluff roulette we call Fluff Fear Factor, as well as some new silliness like "Pin the F on Fluff Boy" and Sweet Fortune Fishing. This year, as we embrace the fluffernutter, we gratefully welcome locally owned, Teddie Peanut Butter as Shenanigan Stage Sponsor.

Fluff Stuff & Grub:

Vendors with lots of Fluff treats will make this a real party. You'll find a wacky collection of times, from Fluff t-shirts to soaps that look like 'smores, from savory barbeque to whoopie pies.  Food vendors include: Kickass Cupcakes, Pao de Acucar, India Palace, Cantina la Mexicana and Somerville High School. Other vendors include: Union Square Main Streets, Groundwork Somerville, Neighborhood Health Plan, Grand, Yelp, Dirty Ass Soap. Pictured is the soap from Dirty Ass Soap. Realistic, eh?

Getting in the Mood: Fluff will be all over Union Square.  From Fluffernutter sandwiches and fancy desserts to Fluff inspired cocktails, even deep discounts and after-festival parties, everyone's getting in on the celebration.

Pictured is Jerry over at P.A.'s Lounge sipping a Fluffachino.
