What the Fluff? A Tribute to Union Square Invention

Welcome to Somerville! Somerville is a city located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, just two miles north oBoston.  Occupying slightly over 4 square miles, its population of 78,000 and myriad immigrants from all over the world make Somerville the most densely populated community in New England and one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the nation.  Rich in both history and culture, the city houses numerous intriguing sites, businesses, and restaurants for every style.

Somerville is defined by its city squares which mark neighborhood boundaries and feature bustling businesses and entertainment venues.  Among the most active today are Davis Square, Union Square, Ball Square, Teele Square, and Magoun Square.  Each offers a mix of ethnic restaurants, bars and shops and small businesses to fit every taste and occasion.

How to get to Union Square:

By car:

From 93 (North or South)

Take exit 28 toward Sullivan Square/Charlestown

Merge onto Mystic Ave

Turn right at Mt Vernon St

Turn right at Broadway

Turn left at McGrath Hwy/RT-28 S

Take the Somerville Ave ramp

Turn right at Somerville Ave

Turn right at Bow St/Somerville Ave/Union Square

 

By Public Transportation:

From Boston

Take the Orange Line to Sullivan Square. Several buses will take you to Union Square including the CT2, 86, and 91.

Other things to do in Somerville:

On September 27, the same Saturday night as the 2008 Fluff festival, the  Local Roots Food and Music Festival will be held at the Community Growing Center, just a 5 minute walk away.  Sponsored by Groundwork Somerville the event features more music and great food to get you through the weekend.

Also taking place this night, Union Square businesses are hosting post-Fluff events and offering specials. From 20% off everything over at Grand to sweet cocktails at PA's Lounge, Precinct, The Independent and La Cantina stay in the 'hood until the wee hours.

For something more low key, Somerville boasts a large number of excellent restaurants and taverns, including Machu Picchu, and Wu-Chon House.  Noteworthy cafes include Sherman and Bloc 11. If you'd like to go further afield check out Somerville's other taste sensations such as  Gargoyles on the Square, Namaskar, Diva, Redbones, Highland Kitchen, Dali and tons more! 

Less than 2 miles away from Union is Somerville's "other square", Davis Square.  Davis  is home to a lively coffeehouse scene with several coffeehouses each boasting its own fiercely loyal clientele. It is also known for its mom-and-pop and independent retailers, vintage stores and  lively bar scene.  With Tufts University nearby Davis welcomes  a large number students.

 

   
 

What the Fluff? is produced by Union Square Main Streets, a non-profit organization working to increase the vibrancy of this Somerville neighborhood by enhancing its business district through active community collaboration. Presented as part of ArtsUnion, a initiative funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and shepherded by the Somerville Arts Council and numerous partners, including Union Square Main Streets, to boost the cultural and economic diversity of Union Square.
