Position Title:
Community Facilitator for Union Square Market
The Community Facilitator is part of a team focused on the
activities of the Union Square Market. Based at the offices of Union Square
Main Streets, the Community Facilitator fosters community involvement in the
Market, coordinates and assesses outreach and educational activities, and
staffs the Market Manager Booth.
The Union Square Farmers Market is a weekly outdoor market
open every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm from early-June to late-October. It
is a collaborative initiative of the City of Somerville, the Federation of
Massachusetts Farmers Markets and Union Square Main Streets.
Responsibilities include
Market
Activities:

Coordinate volunteers to create a festive,
community-oriented environment at the farmers market through recruiting and
scheduling of musicians and other family-friendly performers for each market

Coordinate volunteers to conduct educational
activities at the market such as children’s activities, cooking
demonstrations and classes.

Schedule and coordinate the “Grown in
Somerville Booth” with local farmers and organizations hosting a guest
vendor space to increase community participation.

Coordinate special themed days at the market
that promote Union Square businesses and draw new visitors such as
“Alternative Health Day” with health providers, “Climate Action Day” with
environmental groups, and others.
Market Support:

Conduct and coordinate customer surveys and other data collection tools to
assess the Market.

Oversee sales of promotional items and share
educational materials with market visitors

Assist
Market Manager and USMS staff with general operations as needed
Promotion:
-
Assist with promotion of the market by providing content such as photos, for
the Union Square Farmers Market website, press releases, and other materials
General
- Develop and
maintain good working relationships with market manager, market advisors,
farmers and vendors, consumers, and community members.
- Communicates
regularly with the USMS staff
Requirements
Must be able to work independently and interdependently as
part of a market management team. Ideal candidate will have an interest in
Somerville community, local agriculture, food, and/or local economies. Must
be reliable, friendly, and self-motivated with strong communication and
organizational skills. Background in education, arts administration, or PR
and experience working with multi-lingual and low-income populations
helpful.
Salary
This is a part-time, hourly position. Requires assisting with
market operations from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm each Saturday from June 7 through
October 25 and approximately 5 additional hours a week from mid May through
end of October. Salary is $12-$14/hour based on experience. It is possible
to combine this position with the Community Organizing position also
available.
